About
The Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled would like to help libraries and communities ensure that their StoryWalks and Story Trails are accessible to all individuals.
We can provide both Braille and Audio formats for your StoryWalk/Story Trail.
“The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.” For more information: https://www.kellogghubbard.org/storywalk
Audio
A link to the StoryWalk edition audio recording will be sent to your library. It will take eligible individuals to the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled’s catalog. Individuals will login to their account for BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) to access the audio. Eligible individuals can gain access to BARD through our library.
The StoryWalk audio edition features chimes so the listener knows when to pause and when to start the audio as they move to each page of the book.
Here is snippet from the StoryWalk edition of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems narrated by one of our volunteer narrators.
** The Chafee Amendment enables libraries and other agencies serving the blind and print disabled to create in an accessible format works copyrighted in the United States without express permission. However, the recording must be for the exclusive use of eligible individuals. Public libraries are advised to confer with their legal counsel as to the applicability of the Chafee Amendment regarding the creation, use, or distribution of copyrighted materials in an accessible format. Violation of the Copyright Act can result in a copyright holder seeking legal remedies.
** Our library is creating StoryWalk audio editions and making them available to eligible borrowers through BARD to ensure access and to ensure our library, which is an agency that creates works in accessible format, continues to comply with copyright.
Braille
Once your order is placed, one of our library staff members will follow up with you to determine what braille format is needed to best fit with your StoryWalk.
Images of Braille Options and Descriptions
Braille can be provided to libraries in two different formats. One is hard copy braille which is braille embossed on paper just like a braille book. The second format is a braille embossible which are plastic sheets containing tactile braille dots on one side and a sticky surface on the other side so it can be used like a sticker. The embossible with the braille is added right over a sturdy clear plastic 9″x11 1/2″ sheet. The clear plastic sheet can then be used at each of the StoryWalk stations/stops so the braille on the clear plastic sheet will match the page at the station/stop.
