The Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled is thrilled to welcome our next guest in our youth programming Thrive Thursday: Career Labs series! The series is a hybrid, hands-on experience that helps build a personal Career Toolkit and features weekly guest speakers across industries like wellness, entrepreneurship, technology, and education.
This Thursday, we are welcoming Darrel Kirby, MSW, the co-founder and co-owner of Clarity Therapy! As a mental health therapist, Darrel believes whole-heartedly in his clients and their ability to heal wounds, gain insight, and thrive.
Darrel’s own journey into the field is incredibly inspiring. When he found his life unravelling at age 20 after unexpectedly losing all of his eyesight, he sought psychotherapy. The deep healing he discovered through that experience drove him to establish a career helping others. Today, Darrel is passionate about helping people not only feel better, but actually get better.
An Iowa native who has lived in Iowa City for over 20 years, Darrel graduated with his Master’s degree in Social Work in 2008 and has spent the last 18 years gaining an abundance of experience helping people of all backgrounds. His warm yet firm approach is tailored to each individual, utilizing methods like CBT, ACT, and EMDR to help clients navigate depression, anxiety, trauma, identity concerns, and other major life challenges. When he isn’t helping clients, Darrel is active in his community and you might find him checking out a local band, attending community theatre, cheering at a Hawkeye wrestling meet, or dining out with friends.
Darrel will share his expertise on mental health and wellness, what it takes to build a career as a therapist and entrepreneur, and his personal journey of navigating unexpected vision loss to build a rich, full, and meaningful life.
