April is National Volunteer Month, a time when we take a moment to recognize the incredible individuals who make the library’s mission possible. Whether they are narrating books and magazines that have been frequently requested, meticulously transcribing braille, repairing audio players, or spreading awareness about the valuable resources we offer, our volunteers go above and beyond all year long to support the library.
On Friday, April 24, 2026, we held our annual Elizabeth Perowsky Luncheon. Each year, the Library and the Iowa Department for the Blind honor our volunteers at this special event. The 2026 theme, Rain or Shine: We Can Depend on You!, reflected the unwavering dedication of those we celebrate.
One of the highlights of the luncheon was a presentation by the Friends of the Library, who gifted the library their annual contribution of $12,000. These funds, raised through memberships and community events, power some of our most vital programs. From the Iowa Regional Braille Challenge to the creation of our new youth library space and the purchase of 3D printers, the Friends’ support ensures that our collection and technology continue to grow. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing commitment.
As part of Elizabeth Perowsky Volunteer Program, we took time to honor individuals and groups for their outstanding contributions with the following awards:
Lifetime Achievement Award: Doug Cole
Elizabeth Perowsky Memorial Award: The Friends of the Library
Florence Grannis Library Service Award: Angela Graham
MVP – Master Volunteer Partner Awards
- The Library Consumer Advisory Committee
- Bob White (Audio Narrator)
- Johnathan Ice (Audio Narrator)
The Transcriber Pin: Carolina Wilson
To every volunteer who spends their time and talent with us, we want to say thank you. You don’t just help us process books; you ensure that everyone in our community has access to the stories, information, and connections they deserve.
