Peek-A-Box has returned and this year we are visiting Olympic host cities in honor of the 2026 Winter Olympics beginning next month!
Athens, Greece is the heart of Olympic history and the first stop in our Peek-a-Box journey. As the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games in 1896—and a city deeply connected to the ancient Olympics—Athens represents the spirit of competition, culture, and community that continues to unite the world.
The ideals behind the Olympics began in ancient Greece, where physical strength, learning, and civic pride were all valued. Many traditions we still recognize today, including the Olympic flame and the marathon, trace their roots back to Greece and its legendary stories.
In this month’s Peek-a-Box, explore Athens through books inspired by Greek history and mythology, along with small surprises that bring this iconic city to life.
It is not too late to sign up for Peek-A-Box! You can sign up here or call the library at 515-281-1323 and we will get you signed up! Each month, participating patrons will receive a cartridge of specially curated books set in that month’s Olympic host city. And a sticker to “stamp” the passport they will receive with their first box!
