The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain  (DB106437)

Kayla has just moved into her beautiful new house that she and her husband designed. She gets an uneasy feeling in the house and soon there is vandalism to her yard. The woods at the back of the property give her a creepy feeling.

1965: Ellie Hockley wants to become part of SCOPE which is a program registering black voters, against her parent’s wishes. In that time, the workers are told to be very careful of a white female being seen in the south with a black male. As Ellie works with her partner, Win, a black male. They fall in love meet secretly.

This novel is like throwing a rock into a pond the ripples are far reaching and touch nearly every character in the story.

Dr. Charlotte Reese has a patient, a woman who is comatose and unidentified.  Little does she realize in a few short weeks her whole world will be turned upside down when the identity of her patient becomes known to her.

This story is told from Charlotte’s point of view and you also get the background on the unidentified woman, so you learn how she came to be in the position she is in.

Belle becomes the personal librarian to the collection of J. P. Morgan. She negotiates buys to add to his collection of rare books and manuscripts.  Belle harbors a secret and is frightened of the consequences of the secret being revealed, as she is the breadwinner in her large family. Belle has an affair with gentleman also interested in books with disastrous results.

She continues to serve Mr. Morgan until his death and then his son, as he takes over the library. This historical fiction is based on the true story of Belle de Costa Greene and many of the events did happen.
