Alexandra learns from her father how important the land is. The father chooses Alexandra over her brothers to manage the farm in Nebraska. Alexandra manages it well and adds acres and nice house to the farm. A childhood friend, Carl returns to ask for Alexandra’s hand in marriage, but he first wants to earn his fortune in the goldfields of Alaska. The brothers are against the marriage. While Carl is away, a tragedy occurs which changes Alexandra prospective about her life on the farm. If you enjoy a Midwest setting you might like this short classic.

1950’s: Seven women live in an old boarding house with a cranky landlady with two children and many rules. Every Thursday night the seven women get together for dinner, with a different person cooking each Thursday, sometimes their boyfriends are included. The reader learns the back stories of the women and how they came to be in boarding house in Washington, D.C., and how close this group of women have become. Then there is a murder on Thanksgiving in 1954, which changes everything. Find out what really happened. Did one of women turn on the other? Or was it one of the boyfriends seeking revenge?

Paul Landis was a secret service agent in the 1960’s. He worked with the Kennedy family. He was on the kiddie detail first guarding first, David Eisenhower and then Caroline and John Kennedy. He then became an agent covering Jacqueline Kennedy. He was able to travel to Greece with Jackie. He was on the car in Dallas when John F. Kennedy was shot. He gives a play by play of his thoughts and what he observed on November 22, 1963.
