35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

History

Today, July 26, 2025, the United States marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the landmark civil rights law granting disabled Americans equal access to nearly every aspect of public life. The ADA remains one of the most comprehensive pieces of disability non-discrimination law in the world. The Iowa Department for the Blind celebrates the tremendous progress our society has made since 1990. Thanks to the ADA, many more blind and low-vision Iowans have had access to education, employment, and all areas of community life. However, we also recognize that many barriers still remain.
