Come on a summer adventure with NLS!
The NLS Summer Reading Program, taking place from June 24 to August 9, 2024, is a celebration of reading, learning, and fun for all ages. This year, NLS has three scheduled events and online activities that readers can enjoy at their own pace. The NLS Summer Reading Program hosts story times, an author talk, activities, music, and more!
You must register for each event you wish to attend. Click the “Sign up now” link that follows the description of each event below to register. After you register you will receive a confirmation email from NLS with more details.
Here’s the lineup:
- Kick Off Event (All Ages), Monday, June 24 at 3 p.m. (CST): NLS Director Jason Broughton will kick off this year’s summer reading program with a warm welcome and Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden will delight our young readers with a picture book reading of The Adventures of Marshmallow and Peter (BR25025, DBC30393) by Peter Heath.

- Story Time and Music by Turtle Dance Music (K-3rd Grade), Thursday, July 18 at 3 p.m. (CST): The Turtle Dance Music Man, Matt Mazur, is back! Matt will lead us in singing and dancing and treat our young readers to a reading of Saturday (BR23018, DB98170) by Oge Mora.

- Author Talk: Angeline Boulley and Andrea L. Rogers (YA and Adult), Thursday, July 25 at 6 p.m. (CST): New York Times bestselling author Angeline Boulley will discuss her books Firekeeper’s Daughter (BR24040, DB102762) and Warrior Girl Unearthed (BR25116 in process, DB114761) in conversation with the moderator, the award-winning author Andrea L. Rogers. The recording of this event will be available for two weeks following the talk.

Virtual Tour of the Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress:
- For families or all-age groups. The Thomas Jefferson Building is the oldest and grandest of the three buildings that make up the Library of Congress campus on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. If you are an NLS patron with BARD, you can download this talking book, “Audio described tour of the Thomas Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress (DB121189)” or you can request it from the library.
Whispering Library Escape Room:
- For families or all-ages groups. These puzzles range from very simple to quite challenging, making it something the whole family can do together!
