IMC FAQ Friday: Searching for a Book in Athena

Imc Information

Each Friday the Instructional Materials Center Team will provide answers to questions asked by educators throughout the week in the IMC FAQ Friday post. We hope these are helpful as schools place orders for students who need accessible educational materials.

The most effective way to search for a book in Athena is by using its ISBN. Begin by choosing the book format you require. The search will return records of books that match your criteria, along with details about the quantity available.

Screenshot of Athena search function and results

Total Quantity: The total number of copies that IDB has produced or purchased.

Quantity Available: The total number of copies minus those checked out or on open orders, indicating how many are currently available.

Pay close attention to the book title details. The default for braille is contracted, single spaced, and interpoint. If you need the book in another format, such as double spaced and single sided, you will need to select the correct copy from the search results. The example above shows a book produced in both formats.

If no book records match your search criteria, select the “Make Book” button to request new material creation matching your requirements.
