The Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind in North America for students who are blind or low vision. Braille Institute developed the Braille Challenge to motivate students to practice and hone their braille literacy skills, which are essential to academic and employment success.
The Iowa Regional Braille Challenge held on Saturday, February 24th at the Iowa Department for the Blind. Thank you to our students, proctors and parents for making the 2024 Iowa Regional Braille Challenge such a great success!

What is your favorite thing about the Braille Challenge?
We would also like to send out a huge thank you to Children’s book author/Illustrator Bruce Arant. He has authored and illustrated two traditionally published books, Simpson’s Sheep Won’t Go to Sleep and a follow-up sequel, Simpson’s Sheep Just Want to Sleep! Bruce delighted the Braille Challenge listeners with sharing his story and journey as an author. It was an amazing way to end the day!

To help us celebrate the Braille Challenge and Braille literacy, we are pleased to work with local, small business The Side Garage this year for the Braille Challenge t-shirt. The theme for 2024 is Braille is Beautiful.
All shirts are crew neck and short sleeved. Shirts are ice blue with black lettering. The front of the t-shirt says in print: Braille is Beautiful circling a graphic of a rainbow with Braille is Beautiful in Braille underneath the rainbow. The back of the t-shirt says, Braille is Beautiful, in Braille and includes the logo of the Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled.
All sizing is unisex and all shirts are $25.00 + shipping.
Participants of the Braille Challenge will be provided with a t-shirt that have been generously donated by the Friends of the Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
We are taking orders until March 3, 2024. T-shirts are shipped directly to you.
