Winter Reading Program for Kids

snowflake imageREADsquared Online Reading Program invites you to our Winter Reading Program for KIDS!

As you snuggle by the warm fireplace this winter, or spend time baking delicious cookies the Youth Library invites you to participate in our READsquared Online Reading Program specially created just for you and your family.

For every 4 missions you complete you earn a reading tag. Complete all 16 missions and earn a prize! 
In this program, you will earn points by completing reading missions instead of logging books. Each mission will earn you 25 points. Once you reach 400 points, you have completed the program!

Ages: 0 – 18

Select Register in the top right corner of the screen.
Select if you would like to register an Individual Account. If you would like to create a Family Account, please register yourself first and then register your children under your account.

What is READsquared?

Glad you asked! READsquared is an Online Reading program that encompasses the Tales and Travels 2021 Summer Reading Program. Join Youth Services staff for a fun summer of reading and activities. Attend all 27 virtual events and read 27 books between June 7 – August 6, 2021 and earn prizes. Don’t forget to check out these 27 events on the READsquared calendar so you don’t miss out!

How to Sign Up:

  1. Select Register in the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Select if you would like to register an Individual Account. If you would like to create a Family Account, please register yourself first and then register your children under your account.

Oooohhhh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire inside is delightful… wait a minute, I am not ready for winter yet, are you? Take a deep breath, in the month of December get ready for our two incredible programs! Makerspace Monday, on December 14th, will start our month off by offering a sparkling, dazzling Ornament Workshop mixed-in with hot chocolate and special guest Jodi Aldini. Next, for our STEM and Stories Saturday, on December 19th, we will have a special story time and song with featured guest Emily Tinsman, Miss Iowa 2019-2020. Sign up early and receive a “Woodbead Snowman Kit.”

November is packed with hands-on experiences and listening funMakerspace Monday, on November 9th, we will listen and learn about music with our guest, Amanda Drish from the Des Moines Symphony.  Amanda will take us on a trip to the past as we learn about professional musicians and we will create art on canvas.  STEM and Stories Saturday, on November 21st, is rolling out scented cookie cutter star creations.  We will make Cinnamon Salt Dough ornaments with our guest Ellie.

In the month of October, your youth library is excited and delighted to put learning about recycling at the top of your list! All of us have this in common; clothes, clothes and more clothes! What if I told you that Makerspace Monday, on October 12th, is turning those worn tattered shirts into a practical useable tote bag? Plus, so much more!  STEM and Stories Saturday, on October 17th, is hosting Sarah Borzo, Educator Coordinator from Metro Waste Authority. She will teach all of us about how to take better care of our planet while putting creativity into action by creating a recycled butterfly feeder!
